Video to Text Converter

Upload a video and get what is said in it as text, timestamps or subtitles. Your browser pulls out the sound, so the video is never uploaded. 10 free minutes a day without an account, 30 with a free Google sign-in.

Ready

Transcribe a video

or drop an MP4 or WebM here (MOV in Chrome and Safari)

Only the sound is sent, in pieces, and we don't store it. Copy or download the transcript before you leave.

Three steps

How to transcribe a video free

  1. 01

    Choose the video

MP4, WebM, and MOV in Chrome and Safari: most files your browser plays.

  2. 02

    Press Transcribe

Your browser keeps only the sound and sends it in pieces. The video stays on your device.

  3. 03

    Get the subtitles

Download SRT or VTT to add captions, or copy the plain text.

Only the sound is sent

A video file is mostly picture. Your browser decodes the sound track, turns it into small 16 kHz mono audio and sends only that, so a 1 GB phone video becomes about 2 MB of upload per minute of sound. The picture never leaves your device.

For a YouTube video there is no need to upload anything: paste the link into the YouTube transcript tool, which reads its captions for free.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which video formats work?

MP4 and WebM work in Chrome, Safari and Edge; MOV works in Chrome and Safari. If a video won't open, convert it to MP4 or extract the audio as MP3.

Can I convert MP4 to text?

Yes. Choose the MP4 and press Transcribe; only its sound is sent.

Is the video uploaded?

No. Only the sound track, extracted in your browser, is sent for transcription, and it is not stored.

What about a YouTube video?

Paste its link into the YouTube transcript tool. It reads the captions YouTube already has, free and without a file.

How long can a file be?

Up to 10 minutes without an account, 30 minutes signed in. Long files are cut into 10-minute pieces and joined back together, so the timestamps run straight through. Long files need a lot of memory, so on a phone keep them under an hour.

Is it free?

Yes, up to a daily limit: 10 free minutes a day without an account, 30 with a free Google sign-in. Free minutes reset at midnight UTC. On a very busy day the site's free capacity can run out. Paid credits for more minutes and longer files are coming soon. See pricing.
