Three steps
How to transcribe audio for free
- 01
Choose a recording
Any audio or video file. The page shows how many free minutes it uses before you start.
- 02
Press Transcribe
No account needed for files up to 10 minutes.
- 03
Copy the transcript
Copy it, or download TXT, SRT or VTT. We don't keep it, so save it before you leave.
Exactly what is free
Free minutes reset every day at midnight UTC. A file uses its length in minutes, rounded up, so a 4-minute 20-second memo uses 5.

Transcribing by hand or with AI
By hand, an hour of audio takes most people four hours or more: play a few seconds, pause, type, rewind. AI writes the first draft while the file uploads, and your time goes into checking names and fixing the odd word. For interviews and lectures that is the faster way; for legal records, have a person check every line.
Free versus paid
Paid minutes, for more than 30 minutes a day and longer files, are coming soon; they will work exactly like free ones. YouTube transcripts are always free: see the YouTube transcript tool.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free?
Yes. 10 free minutes a day without an account, 30 with a free Google sign-in, every day, with no card on file.
What are the limits?
Without an account, 10 minutes a day and files up to 10 minutes long. Signed in, 30 minutes a day and files up to 30 minutes.
Do I need an account?
No, not for 10 minutes a day. Sign in with Google for 30.
How do I transcribe audio by hand?
Play the recording at a slower speed, type what you hear, and add a timestamp every minute or two. It works, but it takes about four times the recording's length. Starting from an AI transcript and correcting it is much faster.
Do you keep my file?
No. Your browser pulls the sound out of the file and sends it to us in pieces. We pass each piece to our speech recognition provider and send the text back to you. We store neither the audio nor the transcript. The provider doesn't keep it by default, though it may keep logs for up to 30 days to look into errors or abuse. See the privacy policy.
